Pharma Shouldn’t Worry About Google Algorithm Change to Links

Google Announced today that they are working on rolling out some changes to the top secret algorithm that we all spend our lives chasing.  One of the biggest pieces to note is that they are changing how they pull in page titles for the search results based on inbound links. For many sites this is a potential hit that could result in loss of organic rankings and traffic.

Why won’t Pharma sites be effected?

I don’t see this being an issue for Pharma sites since linkbuilding is so difficult with the FDA regulations that are in place. The majority of inbound links come from news sites, personal blogs, social media, and free/paid link directories. Most of these links more than likely list the site URL, site name, or brand name rather than keyword spam in the anchor text. So take a deep breath Pharma Marketers…this one should pass us by.

10 Reasons Why Every Pharma Marketing Strategy Should Include Paid Search

Pharma Paid Search Top 10In my experience Paid Search has been an afterthought for many Pharma brands when planning their digital marketing strategy. SEO has long been the focus for online search peeps and when it comes to budgeting Paid Search is one of the easiest pieces to eliminate since it does not provide the “long-term benefits” that SEO promises to provide your site. So rather than cut your SEO or Social Media budget to ensure Paid Search is running many folks consider cutting it completely. Wow!

There is no question that SEO can and more than likely will have a significant traffic impact for the website in the long run, but what about now? You just launched a new branded or supporting website and no one knows it exists. Email marketing, press releases, and social media buzz will get it started, but where is the calvary? There is nothing worse than discovering a website with valuable content that people could benefit from that no one knows about. The bottom line is SEO and Social Media Marketing will bring in leads “overtime” but every day a website is up and running without Paid Search running represents a huge missed opportunity for relevant leads.

Below is the long awaited top 10 reasons why every pharma site should be running Paid Search:

1. Instant Traffic – instant relevant traffic sent to your website (not 60-90 days like SEO)

2. FDA Changes – we all know how quick the FDA wants things changed when they see something that violates there guidelines. With Paid Search we are able to turn ads and keywords on and off in seconds not days.

3. Targeted Keywords – If your targeted keywords aren’t working you can adjust them immediately.

4. Uncapped Budget – If your brand is having a strong year and there is extra budget to spend at the end of the fiscal year we can increase your daily/monthly budget to drive additional exposure for the campaign.

5. Beat Your Competitors – Outranking a competitor with SEO can take months or years if their site is seen as an authority for a specific keyword, but with Paid Search your budget can allow you to regain the leads they’ve been capturing.

6. Landing Page Testing – depending upon your site’s goals landing page testing may not apply. For those of you that are thirsty for new patient leads then listen up because testing your landing pages is key to improving your conversion rate. So make sure your team or marketing agency is taking the time to test which pages on your site are converting and what factors are helping the most i.e. a 1800 number call-out.

7. Wider Reach – I guarantee you ( yes I said GUARANTEE) that your Paid Search account will create exposure for your brand on more keywords than your site could possibly be optimized for with SEO. If your have a 20 page site it should only be optimized for roughly 60-70 keywords, which misses a lot of potential traffic.

8. Clear Results – I’ve heard several pharma peeps mention that they need to be able to clearly report to their executives how well the digital marketing campaigns are performing. Your Paid Search report will be the one you will want to give them since the SEO report will note a work in progress for the next few months.

9. Site Change – There is nothing more frustrating to me than when a client decides to change directions and pull down a perfectly good website. I’ve seen several websites that performed well in Organic Search be pulled down due to executive goals changing for the brand. If you were running Paid Search its no big deal because you got the leads you paid for but if you only focused on SEO you turned the site off right when it was starting to perform well.

10. New Tools – Google is constantly coming out with new ways to improve their Paid Search system and recently released their remarketing tool to the public after a year of testing to high profile clients. These tools will allow your brand to not only be at the top of the search results page, but it will provide some significantly better targeting methods than SEO currently provides.

Google Releases Remarketing Tool

This is an amazing tool that is now available to all adwords customers, but I can already see the problems for Pharma Brands. The remaketing system cookies your visitors that have been to a page or section of your website and then “follows” them around to other websites they visit and displays your ad if that website allows Google Ads to be displayed. So yes if your client visits a website called WeCureCancer.com and your ads are relevant to cancer then there is a very high chance that your remarketing campaign will be in effect on this website. Yikes! I can hear the FDA typing up warning letters already. Hopefully we can dig into this and see how we can limit where or what sites are included.

If you are wanting to learn more about what Google Remarketing has to offer I will let the video below speak for itself.

Google Ends Sidewiki

Google Sidewiki LogoThe latest news from Google should make many Pharma marketers very very happy. They sent an email out informing users that Google Sidewiki will be closed effective December 5, 2011. The sidewiki program quickly became a huge problem for pharma sites since it allows users to post on the side of any website. Lets all be thankful this has finally come to an end!

Top 5 Reasons Why People Unfollow You On Twitter

Pharma Twitter Fail5. Tweet Spam It seems that several tweeters either automate their updates or finally remember to login and decide to post 10+ updates within 5 minutes. Not cool.

4. You’re a Retweeter If all you ever do is retweet other people’s information then you definitely won’t see me in your follower log. It drives me crazy to see an update from a power user like @mashable and then see it retweeted 2 seconds later by 10 other people. Note: We all follow Mashable too.

3. TMI There is no question that twitter is a place to learn, share, and connect but posting up to the minute updates on your personal life when your bio says “Search Marketer that loves life etc etc” and I never see a marketing tweet…boom unfollowed!

2. #FF I’m all about introducing old or new pals online, but cut down the #FF tweets and post something that your followers can benefit from or better yet retweet to create additional exposure for your name/brand.

1. Your Tweets Sucks There really isn’t a nice way to say it, but if you don’t fall within one of the above categories then chances are you were unfollowed because your tweets suck. This really goes along with sharing TMI about your personal life, but other crappy tweets include “I’m at …” or  “@nobody yeah me too” …1/5 tweets should be valuable or you might want to try this really cool site called facebook where you can share every detail of your life so your former acquaintances, friends, family, co-workers, pastor, boss, ex, and random strangers can get to know you.

Good luck tweeters. Comment below with your twitter handle if I don’t already follow you and I will be sure to connect. :)

SEO or Internet Marketing?

Some people are still sold on the fact that there is a magic pill that webmaster’s can take to rank higher in the search results. For years I have followed the changes Google has made to their algorithm and they almost always appear to be a step or two ahead of these folks.

Google’s Matt Cutts offers constant reminders to webmasters that Google is looking for what users want and if you build your website with users in mind rather than search engines you will more than likely out rank your competitors. Although this may be true many people continue to ignore the advice and implement “tricks” to improve SEO. It’s not about winning the sprint relay…it’s about winning the marathon!

Build a website that people would want to visit based off of the search queries they could use to find your site. Have a goal for the site whether it is sales, newsletter registrations, or just plan brand awareness you must be able to measure your marketing success. Marketing success is to often evaluated by organic search rankings when it should be evaluated by brand reputation online, conversions, bounce rate, and social buzz.

It is no longer an easy task to break into the market for any niche, but overtime with hard work and focus you can build a successful website.

How Google Panda Changed SEO

Great video explanation of Google Panda and how the update changed SEO strategy forever. Rand Fishkin and the team at SEOmoz are the best in the business in my opinion.

Video of the Week: Mike Sweeney vs Jeff Weaver Fight

It is great to see Mike’s perspective on the baseball fight between him and Jeff Weaver. Some may criticize Mike’s baseball performance or his outgoing Christian faith, but I am very happy that he came back Kansas City and retired as a Royal. Great guy!

Video of the Week: Accidental Sea

This is a really really cool video about what is known as the Accidental Sea, also called the Salton Sea.
